NCCU BLSA Trial Team Soar at BLSA’s Southern Region Mock Trial Competition

On 16 January 2010, the Southern Region of the Black Law Student Association (BLSA), concluded its 39th Annual Convention. During the convention, BLSA hosted its annual Thurgood Marshall Mock Trial Team Competition. This year the 2009-2010 BLSA Trial Team, coached by Judge Ernest Fullwood, placed third in the competition. Team members include: Kirsten Lee (Captain), Titichia Mitchell, Natalya Bodrick, Niccoya Dobson, and Kia Love. The trial team placed third in what is the largest and most competitive region of BLSA. Around twenty teams from all over the Southern region of BLSA competed. By placing third in the competition, the NCCU BLSA Trial Team will advance to the National Black Law Student Association (NBLSA) Thurgood Marshall Mock Trial Team Competition in Boston, MA in March. Only in its third year, this is the first time that a NCCU BLSA trial team has placed at SRBLSA and advanced to Nationals. We are exceptionally proud of the team and wish them the best at Nationals!

BLSA hosts Preparing for Law School Admissions: The LSAT & Your Application Seminar

The College Student Division Committee of the Black Law Students Association hosted Preparing for Law School Admissions: The LSAT & Your Application Seminar on Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at NCCU School of Law for the BLSA NCCU Mentoring Program.

The program began with a Meet & Greet reception. The reception afforded the undergraduate students an opportunity to meet the law student assigned as their mentors. Over 45 undergraduate and graduate students gathered in the Fishbowl to enjoy pizza and ice-breaker activities. With the support from the NCCU School of Law student body, each participant of the BLSA NCCU Mentoring Program has been paired with a law student mentor.

After the Meet & Greet, the participants attended presentations by Shameika DeVane the Assistant Relationship Manager for Kaplan Test Prep & Admissions and Stephanie Barbee Williams the Assistant Dean of Admissions at NCCU School of Law.

Ms. DeVane discussed the quantitative and qualitative factors related to law school admission, inclusive of the LSAT, suggested preparation timelines and other resources for preparing for the LSAT.

Dean Williams provided in-dept insight regarding what the law school admissions staff considers when evaluating an applicant, as well as how to prepare and strengthen their law school application.

DeWarren K. Langley, a second year law student who coordinates the NCCU BSLA Mentoring Program says “as law students, we have a responsibility and obligation to usher in the next generation of law students.”

At the end of the seminar, students registered for the Council on Legal Education Opportunity (CLEO) Pre-Law Exchange Program.

“The mentor program meeting was extremely informative! The meeting energized me and gave me a lot of clarity concerning the law school application process. I finally made the decision to apply to NCCU Law School. I was tremendously satisfied and look forward to future meetings!” says William Morgan, a junior Criminal Justice major at Shaw University.

“The seminar was awesome and helpful. I was not aware of all the aspects of applying for law school,” says Jimmy Short, a junior Business Management & Political Science major at NCCU.

NCCU BLSA partners with Test Prep Program to host LSAT

The College Student Division Committee of the Black Law Students Association in partnership with the Test Prep Program at North Carolina Central University hosted “Preparing for the LSAT” for 28 undergraduate students on Saturday, October 3, 2009.

The College Student Division Committee, chaired by DeWarren K. Langley, conducts and implements programming to assist undergraduates with law school admission in addition to a mentoring program. The Test Prep Program (TTP) provides test preparation for the four major graduate and professional school examinations: GMAT, GRE, LSAT and MCAT. Through TTP, NCCU wants to increase admissions options for underrepresented groups at selective graduate and professional schools across the country. Since 1996, the services of The Princeton Review have been contracted for this program.

Langley, a second year law student believes that current law students must be committed to passing on the lessons they have learned about the law school application process and the journey to obtaining a Juris Doctor degree.

This is the first year BLSA and TTP have partnered.

“I look forward to an on-going partnership with the Black Law Student Association. This is something that I have always wanted to see happen,” says Leon Hardy, Director of the Test Prep Program.

Extreme Makeover: BLSA Edition

NCCU BLSA ADOPT-A-FAMILY PROJECT FOR THE SMITH FAMILY (GARNER FIRE VICTIMS)
Donations are needed for the housewares drive. Please sign up what you are willing to donate on the BLSA Twen page. Signing up will ensure that the family gets what they need without a lot of duplicate donations. By September 22, you will be able to access a gift registry that has been set up for the family, in the event that you would like to donate new items. After you sign up, you can then go to your local Target store and use the gift registry to help with your purchase. The registry will be under the name "NCCU BLSA". Very gently used/like new items will also be appreciated. Items can be placed in the designated box in the fishbowl or given to Brandee Ford or Niccoya Dobson. We will also be taking clothing donations in the box in the fishbowl, the 2 year old girl is a 3T and the 3 year old boy is a 5T. The mother is a size 16-18. New,like new, or gently used clothing is appreciated.

The NCCU Law Chapter of the Black Law Students Association received the National "Johnnie Cochran Social Consciousness" Award to honor outstanding programming and commitment to social justice. The award was presented at the National BLSA Convention on Saturday, March 21, 2009 in Irvine, CA. NCCU BLSA chapter was selected out of over 200 other BLSA chapters in the nation. In the words of the National Vice-Chair, Michelle Augustine, "Your chapter works! Thank you for your commitment to the mission." Congratulations to our BLSA!

Are you interested in serving on the BLSA Executive Board? Are you interested in taking NCCU BLSA to higher levels? If so, then this is for you! BLSA will be holding elections for its 2009-2010 Executive Board. Keep in mind this election is only for officer positions which include: President, Vice-President, Corresponding Secretary, Recording Secretary, and Treasurer. ANY paid BLSA member may run for office. Please refer to the BLSA Constitution (located on TWEN) for a description of each position.

If you are interested in running for a position you need to write and submit a Letter of Intent stating the following: the position you are running for, why you want to hold that position, qualifications you possess, and any objectives or goals you have if you were to hold such position. Please limit all letters of intent to less than one page, double spaced, and no larger than 12 inch font. All related dates are as follows:

NCCU BLSA comes in Second Place for SRBLSA Chapter of the Year!

February 4-8, 2009 (SRBLSA Convention—Nashville, TN)

The North Carolina Central University School of Law Chapter of the Black Law Students Association (BLSA) recently came in Second Place for Southern Regional BLSA Chapter of Year!!!

Over the course of this school year, NCCU BLSA has worked tirelessly to implement innovative programs which serve the needs of its members and the local community, such as the “So You Think You Want to go to Law School?” Pre-Law Conference, North Carolina Community Voters Project, Annual MLK Day of Service, BLSA Week 2008, Project Haiti, Habitat for Humanity, and many others. It is no wonder that NCCU BLSA came in second for Chapter of the Year by .77 (less than a point), surpassing 12 other BLSA chapters in the Southern Region (including chapters at Emory and the University of Miami).

Additionally, NCCU BLSA received the “Johnnie L. Cochran Award” for Largest Membership. With 182 paid members, NCCU BLSA is proud to be the largest BLSA chapter in the Nation!

Another special congrats is afforded to Ms. Amy Oraefo who was elected SRBLSA Sub-Region III Director! As Sub-Region III Director, Ms. Oraefo will be in charge of all the BLSA chapters in the states of North Carolina and South Carolina!!

Congratulations to NCCU BLSA on your commitment to service and cultivating “social engineers”!!

The Black Law Students Association at the North Carolina Central University School of Law would like to commemorate Barack Hussein Obama on being elected the First African American President of the United States of America!

After 400 years of physical and mental oppression, rape, mutilation, castration, etc. and 100 more years of treatment like second class citizens with the daily denial of our constitutional and human rights, no one can deny the RESILIENCE of our people. We stand on the shoulders of giants who cried, prayed, and WORKED, so that our generation would experience a better life. Most of our ancestors were brought to this country involuntarily as CHATTEL, but look how far we’ve come… Although poverty, institutionalized and overt racism, elitism, classism, and several other “isms” still effect and attempt to suppress our people... we will (as always will) remain a RESILIENT fist fighting to the end!!! We have so much to celebrate and be proud of!

In the midst of our rejoicing, let us remember our responsibility to not only be stellar law students and eventually brilliant attorneys, but we have a DUTY to use our knowledge and influence to continue to UPLIFT our people.
